I'm hoping to drive the length of the Trans Canada Highway in May and am looking for tips/advice about car hire companies. Ideally I'd like to pick up a car in Victoria and drop it off in St John's, Newfoundland but I fear that may not be possible. Does anyone have any experience of doing this one-way drive in a rental car? I'm guessing one of the big firms is the way to go (more branches) but previous topics on this are all very negative. I find it difficult to believe that I'm the first person to want to do this trip! I've driven one-way across Australia before and the process was very simple with rental branches in Pert and Sydney.

Generally, car rental agencies in Canada charge one-way fees or 'drop charges', and only allow one-way rentals between locations that are fairly close together (by Canadian standards) and where there is a decent amount of traffic between them. The 'problem' with a one-way rental, at least from the rental agencies' point of view, is that the car has to get back to where it came from, because it belongs to that particular franchise and is registered and licensed in that particular province. We have asked those trying to arrange a cross-Canada one-way rental to report back on the forums how it turned out, and so far, there have only been a very few reports.
