The anime is directed by Tetsuji Nakamura and Yukio Kaizawa and produced. They were aired on in Japan. The plot follows and his Mamodo partner 's adventures in a tournament that will decide the ruler of the Mamodo world. The series premiered on April 6, 2003 and ended on March 26, 2006 with one hundred and fifty episodes in total.

Discontinued airing after episode seventy-seven on Cartoon Network on December 23, 2006 while the Canadian YTV station discontinued the series on episode one-hundred and four. Ten pieces of theme music are used for the episodes: three opening themes and seven closing themes in the original Japanese episodes and two opening themes and two ending themes in the English versions. Several CDs that contain the theme music and other tracks have been released. The series was released in fifty-one DVD compilations by between November 19, 2003 and March 7, 2007. As of July 2009, Thirteen DVD compilations of the English adaption of the anime have been released by Viz Media between November 8, 2005 and December 4, 2007.
